VETERINARY/RESEARCH PART TIME TECHNICIAN

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Farm  Technician is responsible for carrying out the daily responsibilities of caring for the welfare of the animals, including feeding, watering, and vaccinating;  maintaining the grounds of the facility; and assisting the Director of Swine Research and Research Associates in conducting trials at the Veterinary Research Facility (VRF), following company standard operating procedures.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with company standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Performs daily animal husbandry (feeding, water, treatment of sick, etc)
  • Performs work as assigned by the Director of Swine Research & Research Associates for data collection (weighing, treatment assignment, feed collections, etc)
  • Assists in collection of diagnostic specimens (air sample collection, swabbing, fecal samples, etc.)
  • Records daily observations for trial studies
  • Ensures that projects meet Animal Care requirements
  • Manages alarms or emergencies as they occur
  • Assists in loading pigs to be transported
  • Conducts routine building and equipment maintenance
  • Ensures farm has proper supplies to perform daily responsibilities
  • Assists in keeping the office, break room, and restrooms clean, orderly, and neat
  • Adheres to the company’s confidentiality protocol
  • Complies with the practices and principals of biosecurity to safeguard the life and health of the swine herd
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Requires knowledge of scientific research methods and standards, prior experience with pig management and animal husbandry.

 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  1. An Associate Degree in Animal Science  AND
  1. A minimum of 2 years animal husbandry experience OR
  1. Any equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Ability to stand on concrete for extended periods of time

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs repetitively
