VETERINARY ASSISTANT I

The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for assisting the veterinarian team in providing animal care services to clients and customers which includes administrative support. This person will also be responsible for the bathing, brushing, trimming, and providing other grooming services to domestic pets working under established guidelines and methods.  Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining hospital inventory, monitoring & treating hospitalized pets, running routine in house lab work, assisting in surgery & radiology, client communication and education, and routine care of boarding pets.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greets and welcome customers and clients in a friendly, mature, and professional manner
  • To be efficient, very pleasant, courteous, polite, concerned, and helpful to all clients under all conditions and at all times.
  • Schedules appointments for animals  and maintains animal records in company database
  • Feeds, waters, and provides care for the animals
  • Bathes, brushes, trims, and provides other grooming services to domestic pets
  • Cleans and disinfects kennel area, examination area, and general work area
  • Handles animals with care and restrains hard to control animals following established methods
  • Assists in administering medication to animals as prescribed by the veterinarians
  • Assists in monitoring animals recovering from surgery
  • Assists in performing routine laboratory tests or diagnostics (including bloodwork and radiographs) as requested by the veterinarians
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, equipment, and materials
  • Fills prescriptions, measures medications, and labels containers
  • Admits and releases boarding pets, ensuring that items left with pet get returned to the owner
  • Keeps the hospital organized, ensuring a smooth and efficient client flow
  • Recommends products such as flea control, vitamins, diets, vaccinations, and dentals that are necessary for optimal patient care
  • Maintains company equipment in good working condition and notifies management of repairs necessary
  • Performs duties adhering to the company standard operating procedures
  • Follows company safety procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management

Job skills required

  • Active listening skills, both verbal and written communication skills, time management, and service oriented skills are necessary. Administrative data base experience is preferred but not required.

  • High School degree or equivalent

  • A minimum of 2 years experience basic animal behavior skills

  • Ability to work with an array of temperaments and behaviors of animals

  • Ability to work independently under minimum direction

  • Ability to lift over 50lbs

  • Ability to use strength or agility in restraining stronger, more active animals

  • Must be able to kneel, squat, bend frequently for extended periods of time
