Mixed-Animal Veterinarian

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

The Mixed-Animal Veterinarian is responsible for providing practical and scientific services in a small community setting. The clinic services approximately 60% small animal and 40% large animals.  The Mixed-Animal Veterinarian will work in a modern clinic with digital radiology, ultrasound, dental machine, power equine dental float and a full diagnostic lab. The Mixed-Animal Veterinarian will direct a support staff and work closely with local pet rescues and the community.  The Mixed-Animal Veterinarian is also responsible for health ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and practices.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Examine small and large animals and performs diagnostic tests to determine the cause of illness
  • Perform routine preventative care for companion and farm animals
  • Provide in-field emergency care for livestock
  • Prescribes, administers and supervises appropriate treatments for animals
  • Treat and dress wounds
  • Perform surgery on animals
  • Test for, and vaccinate against, diseases
  • Operate medical equipment, such as x-ray machines, sonography, etc.
  • Advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions and treatments
  • Humanely and compassionately euthanize animals when appropriate
  • Provide after-hours emergency services on a rotating basis
  • Train personnel on proper animal handling and care  practices
  • Complies with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS)
  • Ensures animals are being cared for daily, including water, feed and management
  • Provides suggestions to the owners in how to expand and grow the business
  • Ensure the welfare of all animals
  • Assist with other duties as assigned

 

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree with Illinois and Iowa license
  • Minimum of 1 year experience preferred

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Small animal medicine and surgery
  • Large animal medicine and surgery
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills
  • Analytical techniques
  • Knowledge of overall business strategy and operations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Thorough understanding of diseases and disorders detrimental to the welfare of small and large animals
